Childcare Funding Explained

At Glebe Kids, we have various government funding schemes. Below is a comprehensive guide

to the funding options available and when they start for your child.

When Does Funding Start?

Funding for both two-year-olds and three- and four-year-olds starts the term after your child’s

birthday. The table below shows when funding would commence depending on your child’s birth

date:

Child's Birthday Funding Starts
1st January – 31st March Summer term (April)
1st April – 31st August Autumn term (September)
1st September – 31st December Spring term (January)

For example, if your child turns two in February, their funding will start from the beginning of the summer term in April.

2 Year Old Funding

Supported Families: Two-Year-Old Funding (15 Hours)

If your child is two years old and you meet certain eligibility criteria, you may be entitled to 15 hours of free childcare per week, during term time for 38 weeks of the year. Funding begins the term after your child turns two, not from their birthday.

Eligibility for this funding is based on receiving certain benefits, such as:

  • Income Support

  • Universal Credit

  • Child Tax Credit (with an income below a specific threshold)

Children with special educational needs or who are looked after by the local authority may also qualify.

Check your eligibility and apply for this funding on the Hertfordshire County Council website.

Working Parents: Two-Year-Old Funding (15 Hours)

Working parents of two-year-olds may also qualify for 15 hours of free childcare per week. This funding is available for parents who meet the same criteria as the 30-hour funding for 3 and 4- year-olds:

  • Both parents (or the sole parent in a single-parent household) must be working and earning at least the minimum wage.

  • Each parent must earn at least £152 per week but no more than £100,000 per year.

This funding, like other options, begins the term after your child turns two years old.

Check your eligibility and apply for this funding on the Hertfordshire County Council website.

If you do not qualify for 2 year old funding:

Price per 3 hour Session: £27.00

Price per additional hour: £9.00

FLEXIBLE HOURLY RATE

For funded 2 year olds: Price per extra hour over their 15 hours free entitlement: £9.00

Three & Four-Year-Old Funding

Three and Four-Year-Old Universal Funding (15 Hours)

All children aged 3 and 4 are entitled to 15 hours of free childcare per week, available for 38 weeks per year. This is a universal entitlement, meaning no income or employment criteria apply. Funding begins the term after your child’s third birthday.

FLEXIBLE HOURLY RATE FOR EXTRA HOURS:

For funded 3 and 4 year olds: Price per extra hour over their 15 hours free entitlement: £8.00

Extended Entitlement for Working Parents (30 Hours Free Childcare)

Working parents may be eligible for an additional 15 hours per week, giving a total of 30 hours of free childcare. This entitlement is for 38 weeks per year, beginning the term after your child’s third birthday. To qualify, both parents must be working, as outlined under the two-year-old working parents funding.

Check your eligibility and apply for this funding on the Hertfordshire County Council website.
